Meninya Street Car Parking Update – July 2024.

At the July 2024 Ordinary Council meeting concerns were raised from local businesses in relation to changes to on street parking configurations along Meninya Street.

The Meninya Street Precinct Project concept designs, which were released in 2022, have been guided by our community and business feedback since the development of the previous 2019 Master Plan and focus on beautifying the streetscape and improving safety for pedestrians, cyclists and vehicle movements.

In most areas along Meninya Street to capture shared pathways and landscaping, there isn’t enough road width to safely accommodate 45-degree parking with the proposed improvements. The feedback council received from our community regarding parking was to maximise spaces but to avoid reversing cars into traffic during busy periods, which on turn allows for improved safety and better traffic flows.

The car parking configuration in the concept design is under revision as part of the normal detailed design process that Council is undertaking. The Council revised plans will provide the Moama CBD with a net increase of approximately 194 parking bays through the creation of off-street parking (an overall increase in parking of approximately 52%), despite a small reduction in the number of on-street car parking spaces (approx. 24) along Meninya street itself. These changes will be confirmed by Council consultant Spiire who is completing the detailed design.

Council will also look to retain a similar number of disabled car parks along Meninya Street through the revision process, with additional spaces being provided in the proposed off-street parking areas, as close as possible to Meninya Street.

A total net increase of 194 car park bays in and around Meninya Street. This will be confirmed by Spiire though the final revision process where there may be minor changed to these figures.


Project Update: Spiire Australia Pty Ltd has commenced the detailed design process for the Meninya street Upgrade. Spiire has recently completed a feature survey of the streetscape to support a detailed review of the existing features and the previously developed concept designs to ensure the proposal is feasible. The next steps of the design process include the completion of geotechnical investigation, service location and the completion of a functional design to test practicality and functionality of the street. Functional Designs will be uploaded to this page to assist the community and businesses in reviewing changes from the Concept Designs showcased in 2022.

The Meninya Street Precinct Project is one of Murray River Council’s largest projects that will transform Moama into a vibrant precinct of social and economic activity.

Reshaping Meninya Street from a transport thoroughfare into a innovative and sustainable precinct, this project intends to position Moama as a key tourist destination through place-making to compliment surrounding markets.

Strategically investing in infrastructure, parks and open spaces and surrounding points of interest, Council aims to create a 'sense of place' and support high intensity developments including multi-level and multi-function spaces for business and the community to thrive.

Delivered in a staged approach, the multi-year project will enhance not only Meninya Street, but the surrounding precinct to create stronger connections to points of interest including the Horseshoe Lagoon, Moama Beach and the surrounding natural environment.
