Moulamein Flood Study Review
Council are completing a review of the Moulamein Flood Study, with support from WMS Engineering consultants.
The review will ensure mapping and plans capture all relevant data to support flood preparedness and response activities in the future.
Background
Despite the comprehensive data used in the previous Moulamein Flood Study (2019), the town has since experienced its largest recorded levels in the Edward River during the 2022 flood event.
In response, we want to thoroughly review and update the current flood study with data collected from this most recent event.
This review will align the study with the latest information, accurately reflect current conditions, and provide detailed insights into both river and overland flooding.
The project involves updating modelling, along with a review of all available information and past reports.
The community were also invited to offer local knowledge, photos or any information relating to local experiences to support this review.
Draft Flood Modelling Results - May 2025
Draft flood modelling results from the Moulamein Flood Study Review are now available online here:
Moulamein Flood Study Review - Draft Flood Modelling Results
This portal includes:
- Draft flood mapping of both overland flooding (i.e. inundation from local rainfall) and riverine flooding (i.e. inundation from the Edward River, Billabong Creek and associated waterways).
- Calibration results from the 2022 riverine flood event.
The results are classified using different Annual Exceedance Probabilities (AEPs). The AEP is directly related to the magnitude of the flood event. For example:
- An AEP of 1 in 100 year (or 1% AEP) corresponds to the flood that has a 1% chance of occurring every year (6.20 m at the Moulamein Gauge)
- An AEP of 1 in 5 year (or 20% AEP) corresponds to the flood that has a 20% chance of occurring every year (5.33 m at the Moulamein Gauge)
The objective of this portal at this stage of the study is to provide the community with an update on the status of the project and allow you to check out the draft results before it goes on Public Exhibition.
The Draft Flood Study Review Report will be shared with the community in the coming months during a Public Exhibition period, when you will be invited to provide feedback on the report and the draft results. Details will be communicated in advance when an exhibition date has been confirmed, but it is currently expected to take place in August.
