Moama Overland Flood Study

Murray River Council is progressing work on the Moama Overland Flood Study, which is investigating local rainfall and runoff in and around Moama. The study is building a rainfall-runoff computer model to help better understand areas most at risk from intense storm events, such as those experienced in January 2024 and October 2022.

Unlike flooding from the Murray River, these events involve Major Overland Flow; stormwater runoff making its way through Moama towards the river. Council is responsible for managing this type of flood risk, alongside riverine flood risk.

The study is currently in the Model Development and Validation Stage. Consultant WMS Engineering has simulated the January 2024 and October 2022 storm events, with draft results now available for community review.

Your feedback

Council is encouraging residents to provide feedback on the draft results by comparing them with their recollections and records of past flooding. Photos, flood marks, and details of inundation, ponding, or drainage issues are especially valuable.

Feedback can be submitted via the submissions form on this page.

Or, if you prefer to email our consultant direct, please do so at moama@wmseng.com.au

Submissions close 17 October 2025.

This project is supported by the State Floodplain Management Program, managed by the NSW Department of Climate Change, Energy, Environment and Water (DCCEEW).

  • Please provide your feedback on the draft results.

Did the model match what you saw? Or where did water pool, flow or cause problems?

If the model didn't match your experience of overland flooding, then photos, flood marks, and details of inundation, ponding, or drainage issues are especially valuable.

    Thank you.
